Hey everyone! I’m thrilled to share another piece from my ongoing series of weird and wonderful character mashups. As an artist, I am constantly staring at my drawing tools, so it was only a matter of time before one of them became the subject of my art instead of just the medium!
You will see my latest quirky invention. I was holding a classic, bright yellow pencil and realized its long, slender shape was the absolute perfect stand-in for a giraffe’s neck. I kept the main body straight and rigid like a traditional wooden pencil, complete with the subtle vertical lines. At the very top, I added a cute, pale giraffe head, playfully using a black sharpened pencil tip as a little hat or horn right between its ears!

To finish off the design, I added some tiny, stubby legs and a little tail at the very bottom, all bound together with a few wraps of white string to give it a slightly rustic, handmade feel.
Blending the rigid, manufactured lines of everyday office supplies with the soft, organic features of an animal is such a fantastic creative exercise. It forces me to look at the mundane objects around my studio in a completely new light. The bright yellow color is so cheerful, and I really hope this towering little art-supply creature brings a spark of joy and inspiration to your day. I am already looking around my desk to see what other stationery I can bring to life next!
